What Widths Should I Choose?

Like many of you, you’re probably not sure what to use. I’ll offer my professional opinion in so far as the look that will be achieved.

The Bold Look

The bold look sees wide variances in the plank orientation. Examples include the Autumn Leaves Hickory hand scraped below; shown as 8, 4 and 8 ¼” wide. A more common variable would be 3,5 and 7 ¼” shown with the Shady Gardens Walnut.

Conservative Patterns

Sorry folks we don’t handle any of the old fashioned skinny (2 ¼” wide) strip wood floors. Conservative would be 3,4 and 5 ¼” shown with several room scenes below.

How To Measure For Random, Mixed Width?

You don't have to handle the math on your own when buying from us. All we need is the total square footage and we'll figure out the rest. However, for those inquiring minds, a formula example is shown below.

The formula is rather simple if you’re good with basic math principles. I’ll use an example.

• Total Measurement: 1,652 square feet
• Widths Chosen: 4 ¼, 5 ¼, 6 ¼

Add 4 ¼, 5 ¼, 6 ¼ together. This will equal 15 ¾. Considering nearly all of use calculators today we'll convert it into decimals or 15.75. The same holds true for the widths chosen above.

• 4 ¼" = 4.25
• 5 ¼" = 5.25
• 6 ¼" = 6.25

To determine the share in what each width will cover in the 1,652 total measurement, we need to do some division.

• 4.25 ÷ 15.75 = .27 %
• 5.25 ÷ 15.75 = .333 %
• 6.25 ÷ 15.75 = .397 %

Finally, the actual quantity for each width; requiring multiplication. We'll take the total square foot number and multiply each percentage.

(4.25 width) 1,652 x .27 = 446 square feet
(5.25 width) 1,652 x .333 = 550 square feet

(6.25 width) 1,652 x .397 = 655.8 square feet

Total Net Square Footage: 1,651.84 or 1,652

Figures above are based on a net measurement. By way of explanation, the actual measurements were exact, with no allowance for a waste factor. Waste factors for wider random plank should run 10%

Calculating Waste & Final Numbers

(4.25 width) 446 square feet x .10 = 490.1
(5.25 width) 550 square feet x .10 = 605

(6.25 width) 655.8 square feet x .10 = 721.4

Total Square Footage Adding 10%: 1,816.5 or 1,817
